The Aviary
Though this installation I investigate how barn swallows use people’s infrastructure as a nesting space. A cascade of shed-roof structures, a false-front and accompanying image explore spaces where barn swallows have taken up residence historically and currently. Historically a false-front building, reminiscent of those found throughout the western United States and built by 19th century settlers, is used to attract people and develop a sense of community in the west. Inspired by that historic context, The Aviary confronts the viewer with a false-front structure that is designed to attract a community of Barn Swallows. As a whole, The Aviary presents an interplay of interiors and exteriors. Both the structure and accompanying image question the boundaries of architectural spaces, creating a platform for contemplation and understanding of the population overlap of animals and people.
